Giving The Perfect Toast

According to ScienceOfPeople.com, there are 4 main components to writing and delivering the perfect toast….

1.) The Hook – People decide if they like your toast within the first seven seconds. If you don’t hook your audience immediately, you will lose them.

The hook is a one to three line description of the toastee. It should be juicy, funny or mysterious. This is the first line of your speech. Let’s say the person you are toasting is named Spencer. Fill in the blank:

  • Spencer is ____.
  • Tonight you will learn why Spencer ____.
  • The best story I have about Spencer starts with ____.

2.) The Background – Now that you’ve caught everyone’s attention, and you have them hooked, give them an explanation of why you’re giving the toast in the first place.

3.) The 1-2-3 Punch – After your hook and a brief background, you are ready for 1, 2 or 3 stories depending on how much time you have been allotted. Rule of thumb:

  • Under 2 minutes: Hook, Background, 1 Story, Clink
  • 2-5 minutes: Hook, Background, 2 Stories, Clink
  • Over 5 minutes: Hook, Background, 3 Stories, Clink

4.) The Clink – After your final story and your last audience tie-in, it’s time for the clink. This is the part of the speech where you can get sappy. It’s your opportunity to offer well wishes, thanks and gratitude toward the toastee and anyone else in the room. Specifically:

  • Thank the hosts.
  • Offer good wishes or congratulations.
  • Bring in the audience to make those thanks and wishes with you.

What Is The Shoe Game?

According to TheKnot.com, The Shoe Game is commonly played during the shower or engagement party, you may not have thought to play a game during your wedding reception—but tons of couples are starting to add fun wedding games to their reception timeline to help break the ice and keep guests entertained. The Shoe Game is one of the most popular wedding reception games to play because it’s not just hilarious for the couple and guests—it’s also simple in concept and suitable for all ages. All you need to play are two chairs, a list of questions, the couple and their shoes. Intrigued? Learn the shoe game rules here, plus read a few example questions to see how it’s done.

The Shoe Game Rules

The Setup

Ask a member of your wedding party to place two chairs back to back in the middle of the dance floor. You sit in one chair and your partner sits in the other (you shouldn’t be able to see each other). Both of you then take off your shoes—give one of your shoes to your partner and vice versa. You should each have one of your own shoes and one of your partner’s shoes in your hands.

The MC

Designate a “caller” who will come prepared with a list of questions to ask you and your new spouse (we’ll get to those in a second). If you don’t want to put any of your guests to work, your DJ or bandleader can act as MC of this game. Otherwise, it’s a great job for any loved one who isn’t in your wedding party or didn’t get to do a reading at the ceremony, but whom you still want to be involved. Just first make sure they’re comfortable speaking in front of a crowd.

The Questions

Each question the couple is asked should start with “Who…?,” as in “Who is the pickier eater?,” or “Who has the better shower singing voice?” You can even get your guests involved by asking them to write their own questions for the caller to read come game time. The caller should start with simple questions and gradually move to more personal ones (as long as both you and your spouse are comfortable answering them—and letting your friends and family hear them).

The Shoes

Once you’re asked a question, raise your partner’s shoe if it describes their tendencies and your own shoe if it represents yours. Your partner should do the same. The trick is you can’t see your spouse, so you’ll have no idea if they’re answering the same way you are—although you’ll probably be able to tell by your guests’ reactions. Of course, after a few drinks, you and your partner’s answers might get a little unpredictable. But those surprise moments are what make the shoe game so entertaining—especially if you both don’t know the questions ahead of time.

When’s the Best Time to Play?

The shoe game is the perfect activity to get both you and your guests in the mood to party. Play once dinner’s wrapped up, right before the dance party picks up and while the musicians are still prepping—or use this crowd-pleaser as a fun filler to keep energy high while the musicians take a quick break. The only times we’d suggest you avoid playing are during dinner, when you and your guests should focus on actually eating and listening to toasts, or at the very end of the night when sleepy guests have left and the drinks have been flowing for a few hours. And you don’t have to wait until your wedding reception to play the shoe game, either. It’s the perfect icebreaker for your engagement party or wedding shower too.

The questions can be as general or customized to the couple as you’d like. And word to the wise, know your audience before asking super-personal or raunchy questions. (In other words, don’t ask anything you wouldn’t want to be asked in front of your family and friends.) Use these sample questions below as a good jumping-off point for ideas.

The History Of The Engagement Ring

According to Wikipedia, an engagement ring is a ring indicating that the person wearing it is engaged to be married, especially in Western cultures. A ring is presented as an engagement gift by a partner to their prospective spouse when they propose marriage or directly after a marriage proposal is accepted.

Ancient Times:
Although the ancient Egyptians are sometimes credited with having invented the engagement ring, and the ancient Greeks with having adopted the tradition, the history of the engagement ring can only be reliably traced as far back as ancient Rome.

In the second century BC, the Roman bride-to-be was given two rings, a gold one which she wore in public, and one made of iron which she wore at home while attending to household duties. At one time Roman citizens wore rings made of iron. In later years senators who served as ambassadors were given gold seal rings for official use when abroad. Later the privilege of wearing gold rings was extended to other public officials, then to the knights, later to all freeborn, and finally under Justinian, to freedmen. For several centuries it was the custom for Romans to wear iron rings at home, gold rings in public. During this period a girl or woman might receive two engagement rings, one of iron and one of gold.

Renaissance:
The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in the imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy. This then influenced those of higher social class and of significant wealth to give diamond rings to their loved ones.

Victorian Era:
In South Africa, diamonds were first found in 1866, although they were not identified as such until 1867. By 1872, the output of the diamond mines exceeded one million carats per year. As production increased, those of lesser means were able to join in on this movement. However, diamond engagement rings were for a long time seen as the domain of the nobility and aristocracy, and tradition often favored simpler engagement bands.

20th Century:
In the United States, the popularity of diamond engagement rings declined after World War I, even more so after the onset of the Great Depression.

In 1938, the diamond cartel De Beers began a marketing campaign that would have a major impact on engagement rings. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the price of diamonds collapsed. At the same time, market research indicated that engagement rings were going out of style with the younger generation. Before World War II, only 10% of American engagement rings contained a diamond. While the first phase of the marketing campaign consisted of market research, the advertising phase began in 1939. One of the first elements of this campaign was to educate the public about the 4 Cs (cut, carats, color, and clarity). In 1947 the slogan “a diamond is forever” was introduced. Ultimately, the De Beers campaign sought to persuade the consumer that an engagement ring is indispensable, and that a diamond is the only acceptable stone for an engagement ring.

The idea that a man should spend a significant fraction of his annual income for an engagement ring originated from De Beers marketing materials in the mid-20th century in an effort to increase the sale of diamonds. In the 1930s, they suggested that a man should spend the equivalent of one month’s income in the engagement ring. In the 1980s, they suggested that he should spend two months’ income on it. In 2012, the average cost of an engagement ring in the US as reported by the industry was US$4,000. In a 2015 scholarly study, almost a quarter of couples said that they did not buy a ring, and another third spent less than US $2000 on it. Less than 15% of couples spent $4,000 or more. In the UK, estimates of the average cost of an engagement ring range from £1200 to £2000. Scholarly research indicates that expensive engagement rings are associated with early divorces, possibly because spending more than US$2,000 on an engagement ring is strongly associated with debt-related stress. Couples that spend less money on engagement rings and the wedding ceremony tend to have longer marriages and a lower risk of divorce.

Building The Perfect Playlist

1.) LIMIT YOUR LIST – Choose about 20-25 songs per hour. This means that if you’re having a standard 5 hour wedding reception, you’ll want about 20-25 songs for cocktails, 20-25 songs for dinner, and about 30-40 songs for your dance party.

2.) BE DIVERSE – When it comes to building the perfect playlist, it’s all about mixing a variety of styles and genres to make sure there’s a little something for everyone. Your wedding reception will most likely have an age range from small children to grand parents, and not everyone has the same taste in music.

3.) DON’T SLOW THE PARTY DOWN – Once the dance floor is officially open, make sure to plan for only 3-5 slow songs so that your dance floor doesn’t drag too much. Keep in mind that during the ceremony, cocktails, and dinner, your guests have been sitting for a pretty long time, so they’ll be looking forward to upbeat music and party vibes.

4.) KEEP IT APPROPRIATE – There is a time and place for everything, and when it comes to your wedding day, you get to be the judge of what’s appropriate. However, we always encourage clients to think about opting for the radio edit versions of songs if they know some song titles have choice language and content.

5.) CHOOSE THE GROOVE – There are some songs that are fun to sing along with, but may not be easy to dance to…. Pay attention to these culprits. When in doubt if a song will be a good one to add or not, play it and dance to it. If you can feel the beat and fall into a groove KEEP IT! If you can’t – TOSS IT OUT! Another IMPORTANT factor is to keep your songs POPULAR selections. Your family & friends want to dance to what they know, so leave your “underground” or “up & coming” artists in the car and out of the reception.

Old, New, Borrowed, Blue…Why?

History Of The Garter Toss

HISTORY OF THE GARTER TOSS ~ According to PerfectWeddingGuide.com, the bridal gowns were torn by guests attending the wedding. Of course, nobody wants to tear off a piece of their gown. Therefore the garter separates were made. Dresses are now kept intact, and nobody is bothering the bride by tugging at her dress.

Traditionally, the witnesses would accompany the newly married couple to the bridal chambers to ensure consummation. The wedding garter being retrieved from the bride served as proof to other guests that the deed was done, and the garter was then tossed into the sea of people.

Symbolically, the garter was thought to influence fertility. It also symbolized marriage consummation and future children for the couple. Because of this, the garter was fiercely sought after at weddings. It was an honor to detach the garter from the bride and was believed that the luck of the wedding couple would pass to the guest who obtained the garter.
